Do I Need to Pay Tolls in the Netherlands in 2026?
For most drivers the answer is almost no - the Netherlands keeps nearly all of its motorway network completely free for passenger cars. No vignette, no transponder, and no pre-registration are required on the A1, A2, A4, A7, A10, A12, A16, A20, A28, or any other Dutch motorway.
The one car toll on a motorway - A24 Blankenburgverbinding (Rotterdam): Opened on 7 December 2024, the A24 is the Netherlands' first and only free-flow tolled motorway for private cars. It connects the A15 at Rozenburg and the A20 at Vlaardingen via the Hollandtunnel (land tunnel) and the Maasdeltatunnel (water tunnel). The toll is EUR 1.57 per trip for cars and must be paid online via e-TOL within 3 days of travel, or in advance up to 7 days before - there are no physical toll booths.
Kiltunnel (N217, near Dordrecht): This is a separate, locally-funded toll tunnel under the Dordtse Kil, connecting Dordrecht to the Hoeksche Waard. Unlike the A24, it uses a traditional manned barrier plaza. All motor vehicles pay a fixed fee based on height (below or above 2.30 m, including any load); cyclists and pedestrians cross free.
Nieuwerbrug toll bridge (Oude Rijn, South Holland): The only toll bridge in the Netherlands has charged a toll since 1651. Cars pay EUR 0.80 in cash or EUR 1.00 by card; cyclists and pedestrians cross free.
Westerscheldetunnel - now mostly free: Since 30 December 2024, cars and motorcycles (vehicles under 3 m height) pass through the Westerscheldetunnel (N62, Zeeland) for free. Only tall vehicles such as trucks, high-top vans, and buses (height over 3 m) still pay a toll.
Truck toll (vrachtwagenheffing) since 1 July 2026: All trucks and heavy vehicles over 3,500 kg pay a per-kilometre distance charge on nearly all Dutch motorways and selected provincial roads. It replaced the Eurovignette for the Netherlands. An OBU (on-board unit) is mandatory. Passenger cars are completely unaffected.
Netherlands Toll Costs 2026: Current Rates
A24 Blankenburgverbinding - All Vehicles (2026)
The A24 uses a fully electronic free-flow system. Cameras capture licence plates automatically - no stopping required. Pay at e-TOL within 3 days of travel, or in advance up to 7 days before the trip. Rates are adjusted for inflation every 1 January. Trailers and caravans are not charged separately.
| Vehicle Type | Rate per Trip | Notes |

Vrachtwagenheffing - Dutch Truck Toll 2026 and 2027 Rates
Since 1 July 2026 all trucks and heavy vehicles over 3,500 kg (categories N2 and N3) pay a per-kilometre charge on almost all Dutch motorways and selected provincial and municipal roads. The Eurovignette for the Netherlands ended on the same date. Rates depend on the technical maximum mass, the CO2 emission class and, for CO2 class 1, the Euro emission class. From 1 September to 31 December 2026 a temporary 22.3% reduction applies. The 2027 rates are already published and are slightly higher because of inflation. All amounts below are in EUR/km and come from vrachtwagenheffing (RDW).

At the EUR 0.206/km rate for 2027: EUR 16.48 | EUR 30.90 | EUR 43.26. Distances are approximate and assume the whole route is on tolled roads.
Note: Between 1 July and 31 August 2026 the standard rates applied, for example EUR 0.201/km for a EURO 6 artic over 32,000 kg in CO2 class 1. The temporary reduction follows a motion of the Tweede Kamer of 23 April 2026. Monitor vrachtwagenheffing for the 2027 schedule. Motor vehicle tax (mrb) for trucks under 12,000 kg ended on 1 July 2026, and mrb for heavier trucks was reduced from the same date; a temporary zero rate applies from 1 July 2026 to 1 January 2027.
Eurovignette - Ended for the Netherlands on 1 July 2026
The Eurovignette is no longer valid in the Netherlands. It is still required for trucks in Sweden and Luxembourg. Current Eurovignette tariffs are published at Eurovignettes.

How to Pay Netherlands Tolls in 2026
A24 - e-TOL (Free-Flow, All Vehicles)
- No toll booths - cameras read licence plates automatically on the road
- Pay at e-TOL within 3 days of travel (iDEAL | Wero or credit card), or pay in advance up to 7 days before travel
- Frequent users can register for automatic payment with an approved provider (for example 24TOLL, Flitsmeister or MOVE-IZI), or through a fleet account
- Foreign vehicles pay equally; if you pay late you receive a payment reminder by post with EUR 9.00 administration fee
- If the payment reminder is not paid, a fine of EUR 35.00 follows, in addition to the outstanding toll
Kiltunnel - Manned Barrier Plaza
- Cash: Accepted at the plaza; banknotes larger than EUR 50 are not accepted
- Card: Maestro, V Pay, Visa and MasterCard accepted
- Telecard: A rechargeable multi-trip card for regular users, discounted versus cash; requires a EUR 4.55 deposit and a minimum top-up of EUR 15
- The t-tag of the Westerscheldetunnel is not used at the Kiltunnel
Nieuwerbrug - Bridge Keeper
- Cash: EUR 0.80 for cars
- Card: EUR 1.00 for cars; the bridge keeper has a card terminal
- The toll is collected on site only while the bridge keeper is present
Westerscheldetunnel - Tall Vehicles (Category 3 and 4)
- Contactless and cards: Debit card, credit card, fuel card, smartphone or smartwatch at the toll plaza (lane 6 and lane 7)
- Cash: Accepted at the check-out lane (lane 6) from Monday to Friday between the morning and evening rush hours; outside these hours use a card or t-tag
- T-tag: Electronic windscreen tag (lane 4); ~40% discount vs. standard rate; register via movenience.com; frequent-user discount (150+ passages/year) gives a further 20% off the t-tag rate
- Toll-free lanes: Lanes 1 to 3 for categories 1 and 2, lane 5 for motorcycles (category 5)
Vrachtwagenheffing - OBU Required for All Trucks Since 1 July 2026
- Every truck over 3,500 kg must carry a valid, active OBU (on-board unit / tolkastje) at all times while driving in the Netherlands - the OBU must stay switched on, including on non-tolled roads
- OBUs use GNSS satellite navigation to track kilometres on tolled roads and transmit data to the service provider for billing
- Approved providers include NedLinq, AS24/TotalEnergies, Axxes, Telepass, Tolltickets, Toll4Europe, and Eurowag - full list at Vrachtwagenheffing providers
- NedLinq offers OBU collection points near the border for drivers entering the Netherlands for the first time
- Compatibility warning: OBUs from Toll Collect (Germany) and Satellic (Belgium) are NOT compatible with the Dutch system - a separate Dutch-approved OBU is required
- The Eurovignette for the Netherlands ended on 1 July 2026 (it remains required for Sweden and Luxembourg)
- Zero-emission trucks and vans up to and including 4,250 kg are exempt (automatic with a Dutch registration; foreign-registered vehicles must register the exemption). Zero-emission trucks above 4,250 kg are not exempt and pay lower rates
- Also exempt: motorhomes, refuse trucks, street sweepers and drain cleaners (automatic with a Dutch registration; foreign-registered vehicles must apply). Classic trucks (40 years or older, private use) can apply for a dispensation - see Dispensation and exemption
- Driving without a working OBU risks a fine

- Since 2024 the bridge keeper accepts card payments; car toll EUR 0.80 cash or EUR 1.00 card, the first increase since 2002
Road pricing for passenger cars (rekeningrijden):
- National road pricing is planned for 2030; no passenger car motorway toll is in effect in 2026
Planning Your Journey in 2026
For passenger car drivers:
- The only tolls you are likely to encounter are EUR 1.57 if you use the A24 near Rotterdam, EUR 2.00 (cash) if you use the Kiltunnel near Dordrecht, or EUR 0.80 (cash) at the Nieuwerbrug bridge - all other Dutch motorways are completely free
- The Westerscheldetunnel (N62, Zeeland) is free for cars since December 2024 - no charge when crossing into Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
- To avoid the A24 toll, use the free Beneluxtunnel or the Van Brienenoordbrug - slightly longer but toll-free
- To avoid the Kiltunnel toll, use the free Heinenoordtunnel (A29) or the A15/A16 route via the Moerdijkbrug instead - longer, but toll-free
- Rotterdam and other city centres operate zero-emission zones (milieuzones) restricting older diesel vehicles - these are environmental restrictions, not road tolls
For HGV operators:
- Make sure each truck has a working Dutch-approved OBU, switched on, before it enters the Netherlands
- Your existing German (Toll Collect) or Belgian (Satellic) OBU does not work in the Netherlands - a Dutch-approved unit is required
- A standard EURO 6 artic (over 32,000 kg, CO2 class 1) pays EUR 0.156/km until 31 December 2026 and EUR 0.206/km in 2027; a typical Amsterdam to Rotterdam run (~80 km) costs approximately EUR 12.48 now and EUR 16.48 in 2027
- Zero-emission trucks and vans up to 4,250 kg are exempt; zero-emission trucks above 4,250 kg pay lower rates
- Budget separately for the A24 flat trip charge for trucks and buses (EUR 9.49) if your route uses the Blankenburgverbinding (no vrachtwagenheffing is charged on that road), for the Kiltunnel height-based fee (EUR 5.00 cash for vehicles 2.30 m and above) if your route passes through Dordrecht, and for the Westerscheldetunnel (EUR 18.20 or EUR 25.00 standard) for vehicles over 3 m height
Cross-border travel:
- Entering Germany: Cars free on Autobahn; trucks pay Toll Collect - see Germany Toll Guide
- Entering Belgium: Cars free on motorways; trucks pay viaPass/Satellic - see Belgium Toll Guide
- Entering Luxembourg: Cars free; trucks still require Eurovignette - see Luxembourg Toll Guide
- Entering France: Cars pay tolls on most motorways - see France Toll Guide
Frequently Asked Questions 2026
Do I need a vignette for the Netherlands?
No, not for cars - Dutch motorways never needed a vignette. The only car tolls are the A24 (EUR 1.57 per trip, paid online via e-TOL within 3 days), the Kiltunnel near Dordrecht (EUR 2.00 cash per passage) and the Nieuwerbrug bridge (EUR 0.80 cash). For trucks over 3,500 kg the Eurovignette ended on 1 July 2026; trucks now pay the vrachtwagenheffing per kilometre and need an OBU.
Is the Westerscheldetunnel still free for cars in 2026?
Yes. Since 30 December 2024, all vehicles under 3 m in height pass for free. The tunnel now only charges tall vehicles (trucks, high-sided vans, buses - height over 3 m): EUR 18.20 standard or EUR 11.00 with a t-tag for category 3; EUR 25.00 standard or EUR 15.00 t-tag for category 4.
How much does the Kiltunnel cost?
Cyclists and pedestrians cross free. Motor vehicles under 2.30 m in height (including any load) pay EUR 2.00 cash or EUR 1.45 with a Telecard; vehicles 2.30 m and above pay EUR 5.00 cash or EUR 3.80 with a Telecard. Caravans and trailers towed behind a vehicle are not charged separately.
Is there a toll bridge in the Netherlands?
Yes. The Nieuwerbrug bridge over the Oude Rijn is the only toll bridge. Cars pay EUR 0.80 in cash or EUR 1.00 by card; boats passing under the bridge pay EUR 2.75. Cyclists and pedestrians cross free.
What is the vrachtwagenheffing and when did it start?
The vrachtwagenheffing is the Netherlands' distance-based truck toll. It started on 1 July 2026 and replaced the Eurovignette. It applies to all trucks over 3,500 kg (N2 and N3) on almost all Dutch motorways and selected regional roads. Rates from 1 September to 31 December 2026 range from EUR 0.019/km (light, clean vehicle) to EUR 0.379/km (heavy EURO 0). For 2027 the range is EUR 0.026/km to EUR 0.499/km. A typical EURO 6 artic (over 32,000 kg, CO2 class 1) pays EUR 0.156/km until 31 December 2026 and EUR 0.206/km in 2027.
Can I use my German or Belgian OBU in the Netherlands?
No. OBUs from Toll Collect (Germany) and Satellic (Belgium) are not compatible with the Dutch vrachtwagenheffing system. You need a separate OBU from a Dutch-approved provider such as NedLinq, Toll4Europe, Axxes, Telepass, or AS24. The Westerscheldetunnel t-tag is a separate device for that tunnel only.
What happens if I forget to pay the A24 toll?
You have 3 days after your trip to pay at e-TOL. After that you receive a payment reminder by post with EUR 9.00 administration fee. If the reminder is not paid, a fine of EUR 35.00 follows in addition to the toll. Vehicles with foreign licence plates must pay the toll too.
Will the Netherlands introduce a passenger car motorway toll?
National road pricing (rekeningrijden) is planned for 2030. As of 2026, Dutch motorways remain free for passenger cars except the A24, and the locally-operated Kiltunnel and Nieuwerbrug bridge charge a toll.
